Van Dijk is in contention to defend his prize and he’s joined in the running by Sadio Mane and Jordan Henderson. Henderson has plenty of support, with Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer admitting he would give his vote to the midfielder at the start of the month. “I believe that if the season was to end tomorrow, he would be my Player of the Season. Absolutely no doubt about it,” Shearer said, per Goal. And then there’s Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, who, in many people’s eyes, is the most talented player in the English top flight. De Bruyne has eight goals and 16 assists in the Premier League this season and his rating of 7.96 on WhoScored is the highest out of any player in the division. Sky Sports put it to the fans by running a poll on Twitter asking which player should win the Premier League Player of the Year award. Given a choice of Henderson, Mane, De Bruyne and Van Dijk, 201,997 fans voted. And De Bruyne came out on top with 35% of the vote. Mane received 28% of the votes, Van Dijk had 15% and Henderson 21%. So it was very tight, but De Bruyne came out on top ahead of the Liverpool trio. read also: Sadio Mane: Liverpool forward favoured to win PFA award While the season is likely to go without a Premier League winner’s medal, De Bruyne could end it with an individual accolade.
