The Colonels were tabbed to finish ninth in the preseason poll and struggled early in the season. However, they peaked at the right time, winning seven of their last eight to earn a No. 4 seed in the conference tournament. Led by three huge performances from Player of the Year Cassidy Barrios, Nicholls defeated No. 5 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, No. 1 Lamar and No. 2 Stephen F. Austin to earn this season’s automatic bid. They travel to Starkville, Miss., to take on national No. 1 seed Mississippi State on Saturday at 5 p.m. The game will air on ESPN2. The Bulldogs finished the season 32-1 overall with a perfect 16-0 record in SEC play. Central Arkansas – WBI – vs. Southern Illinois Edwardsville – Wednesday, March 15 – 7 p.m.The Sugar Bears (22-9, 14-4 SLC) open the postseason at home against the SIUE Cougars. This is the third straight season and fifth time in the last eight years that UCA will be in national postseason play. It will be Central Arkansas’ second time in the WBI, having hosted eventual champion UAB in 2011 in the Sugar Bears’ first season of Division I postseason eligibility after completing the four-year transition period to Division I which began in 2006-07. The Sugar Bears defeated Abilene Christian 54-41 in the Southland Conference Tournament before falling to Stephen F. Austin in the semifinal 70-60. SIUE finished the season with a 17-14 overall record and 13-5 mark in the Ohio Valley Conference. Lamar – WNIT – at TCU – Thursday, March 15 – 6:30 p.m.The Cardinals (22-7, 17-1 SLC) are making their sixth appearance in a national postseason tournament in the last nine years. This will be LU’s third time in the WNIT. The Cardinals previously appeared in the WNIT in 2011 against Arkansas and 2014 against Southern Miss. Lamar is 2-4 all-time against TCU – the teams last met in the 2014-15 season when TCU was a 72-68 winner over the visiting Cardinals. This season, the Horned Frogs finished 19-12 (9-9, Big 12). After a dominant outright regular season championship season, Lamar dropped its semifinal in the conference tournament to eventual champion Nicholls 74-68. Austin earned an at-large bid to the WNIT while Central Arkansas will compete in the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI). Stephen F. Austin – WNIT – at George Mason – Friday, March 16 – 6 p.m.SFA (25-6, 16-2 SLC) accepted an at-large bid to the WNIT and heads north to Fairfax, Va., to face George Mason. This will mark the team’s fifth WNIT appearance in program history, and first since the 2014-15 season. SFA will face the Patriots for the second time in as many seasons. The Ladyjacks bested George Mason last season in Fairfax by a 77-76 score and own a 2-0 edge in the all-time series. The Patriots finished the season at 23-9 (11-5 A10). Stephen F.
